Description

A proof impression of J-736, the sixteenth variety in the 1869 quarter experimental program. The final group of varieties in the series represents the most evolved design concepts, refined through fifteen preceding iterations. The quarter's heraldic eagle reverse, which had been a staple of the denomination since the 1830s, was subject to particular scrutiny in these later patterns, as the reverse offered significant opportunities for design innovation.
