Description
A second proof half dime pattern for 1869, continuing the experimental series for the dying denomination. The four varieties produced in 1869 match the output of 1868 and exceed the single variety of 1867, suggesting that William Barber brought renewed interest to the half dime pattern program in his first year as Chief Engraver. These patterns may document alternative small silver coin designs that the Mint was considering as potential replacements for the half dime should the denomination be continued in a modified form.
