Description
This proof half dime pattern from 1869 features one of the final experimental designs for a denomination approaching its end. The Seated Liberty half dime had been struck since 1837, but the nickel five-cent piece introduced in 1866 had rendered the small silver coin commercially obsolete. The 1869 pattern program produced four varieties, a surprisingly robust experimental effort for a denomination on death row. These patterns explored alternative uses for the half dime's silver planchet or tested design concepts applicable to other denominations using the half dime as a convenient test platform.
