1868 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-620
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This proof three-cent pattern is among the later entries in the 1868 experimental series for the denomination. J-620 continues to demonstrate the Mint's sustained interest in three-cent coin design during a year that produced an unusually high number of pattern varieties. The three-cent nickel would ultimately prove to be one of the longest-lived Reconstruction-era denominations, surviving through 1889, and these patterns helped ensure that its design remained optimized for production and use throughout its extended run.
