Description
This proof three-cent nickel pattern from 1868 begins a remarkably extensive series of experimental varieties for the denomination, with the year producing more three-cent pattern varieties than any other in the Reconstruction period. The three-cent nickel had been introduced only three years earlier in 1865, and its design was still subject to potential refinement. Longacre's Liberty Head obverse and Roman numeral III reverse provided the foundation for these experiments, which explored alternative portrait styles, wreath arrangements, or compositional modifications for the small-denomination coin.
