Description
The 1868 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-615a is a proof three-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse is the nickel three-cent Liberty head set into a cent-size die, which leaves an unusually wide border, and its reverse shows a plain Roman numeral III inside an agricultural wreath. About half a dozen are known; one tested at about 87% copper and 13% nickel. It is struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-681 and Adams-Woodin 691. Cataloged as PCGS #60828.
