Description
A compositional variant of J-617, struck on an alternative planchet to test the design's performance in a different metal. The "a" suffix varieties within the three-cent pattern series provide valuable metallurgical data alongside the design information contained in the main varieties. These pieces were struck in copper, aluminum, or a modified nickel alloy to evaluate the design under different striking conditions. The three-cent denomination's small size made it particularly sensitive to compositional changes.
Rarity Notes
