Description

A thick planchet variant of J-615, this proof three-cent pattern was struck on a heavier blank than the standard version. The thick planchet designation indicates the Mint was testing how the design would perform on a coin of greater mass, which would affect both striking characteristics and the visual impact of the finished piece. Planchet thickness experiments were an important component of the Reconstruction-era pattern program, as the relationship between planchet dimensions and die performance was still being systematically studied for the newer nickel-alloy denominations.
