Description
A proof impression of the J-659 half eagle pattern, among the later entries in the 1868 experimental series. Gold patterns from the late Reconstruction period document the Mint's engagement with design questions that would not be fully resolved until the Barber coinage redesign of 1892 and the subsequent Saint-Gaudens and Indian Head designs of the early twentieth century. These 1868 experiments represent early steps in a design evolution that would span multiple decades.
