Description
The 1868 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-656 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was the first attempt at an international coinage: after the 1867 Paris monetary conference, a bill proposed a five-dollar piece of 124.45 grains, instead of the standard 129, to equal a French 25-franc coin. About a dozen are known in copper, one or two of them gilt. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-729, Adams-Woodin 654 and Taxay EP539. Cataloged as PCGS #60874.
