Description
The 1868 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-657 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was the first attempt at an international coinage: after the 1867 Paris monetary conference, a bill proposed a five-dollar piece of 124.45 grains, instead of the standard 129, to equal a French 25-franc coin. USPatterns.com confirms only a few examples with the plain edge in copper. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-730, Adams-Woodin 653 and Taxay EP540. Cataloged as PCGS #60875.
