Description
A gilt version of the J-656 half eagle pattern, this proof piece was struck in a base metal and then gold-plated to simulate the appearance of a gold coin. Gilt patterns served a practical purpose: they allowed the Mint to evaluate a design's visual impact in gold tones without committing actual gold bullion to each experimental piece. The gilding process applied a thin layer of gold to a copper or bronze planchet, producing a convincing approximation of the finished gold coin. Gilt patterns are particularly valuable for understanding the Mint's design evaluation process.
