Description
The fourth and final eagle pattern variety for 1868, this proof piece concludes the year's experimental program for the ten-dollar gold denomination. J-664 closes out the most productive year of eagle pattern production in the Reconstruction period, with four varieties (plus a gilt variant) documenting a comprehensive design evaluation. The Liberty Head eagle would continue in production through 1907 before Augustus Saint-Gaudens' magnificent Indian Head design transformed the denomination, making these 1868 experiments part of the long prehistory of that eventual redesign.
