Description
This proof eagle pattern from 1868 begins a four-variety series for the gold ten-dollar denomination, the most extensive eagle pattern program in the Reconstruction era. The eagle occupied a prominent position in the American gold coinage hierarchy, and its Liberty Head design had been a familiar fixture since 1838. The four-variety 1868 program indicates increased Mint interest in modernizing the denomination, with J-661 establishing the first of several experimental concepts that would be evaluated during the year.
