Description
The 1868 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-662 is a proof eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse, attributed to Longacre, shows a Liberty head facing left in a coronet inscribed LIBERTY within 13 stars, and its reverse a small eagle with a shield on its breast and IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above. Over a dozen are known, several gilt; most are from the low-date die (Pollock-735), and two from a high-date die (Pollock-737). It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates the low-date die R-6 and the high-date die R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-735 and Pollock-737, Adams-Woodin 651 and Taxay EP544. Cataloged as PCGS #60880.
