1868 Atypical Die Clash ADC-3C-1868-01
Error
Description
Cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-3c-1868-01, this atypical die clash on the 1868 Nickel Three Cent Piece reveals evidence of two to three distinct clash events — an unusually complex die interaction history that distinguishes it from the single-event clashes that constitute the majority of documented examples. James B. Longacre designed the Nickel Three Cent Piece (1865-1889) with a left-facing Liberty head on the obverse and a large Roman numeral III within a wreath on the reverse. The reverse of this specimen shows most of the perimeter of the obverse face impressed in incuse — a naked-eye-visible clash impression that makes this variety immediately accessible without magnification. Discovered by Michael Rusk, this variety documents a scenario where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them on multiple occasions, each impact transferring design elements from one die to the other as shallow incuse impressions. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes in that the transferred design elements appear in unusual positions, orientations, or combinations that cannot be explained by a single misalignment event, suggesting the dies were displaced or rotated between successive clash impacts. Philadelphia produced approximately 3.25 million Nickel Three Cent Pieces in 1868, a relatively small mintage that limits the available population for variety hunting. The multiple clash events visible on this die pair make ADC-3c-1868-01 a compelling study piece for understanding die clash mechanics, as the overlapping transferred impressions from two or three impacts create a layered diagnostic pattern that requires careful analysis to decompose into its constituent events. Collectors should examine the reverse under strong angled lighting to resolve the perimeter of Liberty's face amid the wreath and denomination elements.
