Description

The business strike version of J-557 represents one of the scarcer two-cent pattern varieties from 1867. Like other business strike patterns from this period, it was produced in very limited quantities compared to the proof version. The piece provides insight into how Longacre's shield design performed under standard production conditions, with the IN GOD WE TRUST motto banner showing typical strike characteristics rather than the sharp, fully delineated lettering seen on proof examples. Bronze two-cent patterns from the late 1860s occupy an interesting collecting niche as they document the twilight years of America's first motto-bearing denomination.
