Description

This proof two-cent pattern from 1867 features the shield design that had carried IN GOD WE TRUST since the denomination's inception in 1864. As the first U.S. coin to bear the national motto, the two-cent piece served as the template for motto placement across all other denominations during the Reconstruction period. Longacre's shield obverse with its crossed arrows and olive branch had proven an effective vehicle for the motto text, which appeared on a ribbon across the top of the shield. The reverse displays a wreath enclosing 2 CENTS. By 1867, regular-issue two-cent pieces were already declining in popularity as the new nickel five-cent coin absorbed their role in small transactions.
