Description

A second proof two-cent pattern variety for 1867, distinguished from J-554 by variations in die characteristics or metallic composition. The two-cent denomination occupied a unique position in the Reconstruction pattern program because it already bore the IN GOD WE TRUST motto on its regular-issue coins, having been designed with the motto from the start in 1864. Pattern varieties for this denomination in 1867 may therefore represent experimental design modifications beyond the motto, such as alternative reverse wreath arrangements or tests of different bronze alloy ratios. The shield obverse remained consistent with the adopted design, maintaining visual continuity with circulating two-cent pieces.
