Description
The final two-cent pattern listed for 1867, this proof specimen closes out a four-variety series for the denomination. The two-cent piece would continue to see declining mintages through 1872 before the denomination was abolished by the Coinage Act of 1873. These late-era patterns document the Mint's continued experimentation with a denomination whose days were numbered, testing design refinements that might extend its commercial viability or exploring alloy modifications to reduce production costs. The shield and wreath design elements remain consistent with Longacre's original 1864 concept.
