Description

This proof quarter pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for the Seated Liberty twenty-five cent piece. The quarter had received the IN GOD WE TRUST motto on its regular-issue coins beginning in 1866, and this pattern may explore refinements to the motto placement or alternative design concepts for the denomination. The Seated Liberty quarter's larger size compared to the dime provided more generous space for the motto and other design elements. By 1867, the silver denominations from the quarter through the dollar were all carrying the motto, making the quarter pattern program part of the broader post-mandate design optimization effort.
