The 1866 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-549 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was struck from the regular 1866 Liberty Head double eagle dies, with the motto, so its design matches the regular coin; only the metal differs. Judd lists it in copper with a reeded edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-7. Judd classes it as a die trial, a strike from regular dies in a metal other than the coin's own.
