Description

A variant of the 1866 dime pattern testing an alternative arrangement of the IN GOD WE TRUST motto on the Seated Liberty dime design. While J-534 represents the primary motto configuration, J-535 explores a different approach — a modified lettering style, alternative ribbon positioning, or different die preparation. The Seated Liberty dime had been in continuous production since 1837, making it one of the longest-running American coin designs, and integrating new elements required careful consideration of the established aesthetic. This proof striking allows direct comparison with J-534 to evaluate which motto placement best harmonized with the existing reverse design. The dime's small diameter of approximately 17.9mm presented particular challenges for legible motto placement, requiring the engraver to balance text size against artistic proportion.
