Description
This proof dime pattern documents one of the most significant design changes in Seated Liberty coinage history: the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST to the ten-cent denomination. The obverse retains Christian Gobrecht's original Seated Liberty design — Liberty seated on a rock, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap in her left hand and a shield in her right, with thirteen stars around the border. The reverse displays the open wreath enclosing ONE DIME with a ribbon bearing IN GOD WE TRUST positioned above the eagle or within the wreath area. Prior to 1866, Seated Liberty dimes had carried no motto. The Coinage Act mandate required its addition, and this pattern represents the die trial that preceded the adoption of the WITH MOTTO reverse on all regular-issue dimes beginning in 1866. Struck in standard .900 silver composition.
