Description

This proof quarter eagle pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for the gold $2.50 denomination. The quarter eagle had carried the Liberty Head design by James B. Longacre since 1840, and by 1867 the Mint was exploring potential modifications as part of its comprehensive post-Civil War coinage review. Gold coins presented unique pattern-making considerations due to the high intrinsic value of the metal, making each experimental striking a significant investment. The IN GOD WE TRUST motto had been added to the regular-issue quarter eagle in 1866, and this pattern may document refinements to the motto placement or broader design alternatives for the small gold denomination.
