1867 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-601a

Description
A compositional variant of J-601, this proof half eagle pattern was struck on an alternative planchet type as indicated by its "a" suffix. Gold pattern suffix varieties represent some of the rarest pieces in the entire Judd catalog, as the Mint had both practical and financial reasons to limit the production of experimental gold coins. This variant tested the design on a different metal— copper or aluminum as trial pieces—or on a gold planchet of different weight or fineness. The visual contrast between the same dies struck on different metals provides valuable information about design performance across varying compositions.
