Description

This proof half eagle pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for the gold five-dollar denomination. The Liberty Head half eagle had been one of the most widely used gold coins in American commerce since its introduction in 1839, and its design was being evaluated for potential modifications during the Reconstruction period.
