Description
This proof half eagle pattern from 1867 features an experimental design for the gold five-dollar denomination. The Liberty Head half eagle had been one of the most widely used gold coins in American commerce since its introduction in 1839, and its design was being evaluated for potential modifications during the Reconstruction period. The half eagle occupied a sweet spot in the gold coinage spectrum—large enough to be commercially significant but small enough for practical daily use in regions where gold circulated freely. The IN GOD WE TRUST motto had been added to the regular-issue half eagle in 1866, and this pattern continues the design refinement process.
