Description

This proof double eagle pattern from 1867 represents experimental work on the twenty-dollar gold denomination, the highest value regular-issue coin in the American series. The double eagle had been introduced in 1849 following the California Gold Rush and quickly became the standard unit of large gold transactions. The Liberty Head design by James B. Longacre featured his distinctive rendering of Liberty wearing a coronet, paired with a heraldic eagle reverse. The 1867 pattern program explored potential refinements to this design, including the IN GOD WE TRUST motto that had been added to the regular-issue coins in 1866. Each double eagle pattern represents a substantial investment of gold, making these among the most valuable pattern coins by intrinsic content.
