Description

Sole documented cud for the 1866 Indian Head Cent, surviving from a year when Philadelphia was the only mint producing cents for the post-Civil War United States. Longacre's design had transitioned from copper-nickel to bronze two years earlier, and the softer alloy responded differently to striking pressure. Philadelphia struck approximately 9.82 million Indian Head Cents in 1866, limiting the surviving population of any variety. No cross-references are known beyond CU-1c-1866-01. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety is a tangible artifact of die failure from the Reconstruction era.
