Description

Produced just one year after the conclusion of the Civil War, this 1866 Indian Head cent exhibits a die clash on the obverse where the wreath from the reverse die transferred through the feathers of the Indian head design. Die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, impressing elements of each die's design into the opposing die face. On subsequent strikes with planchets in place, these incuse impressions appear as raised design elements foreign to that side of the coin. The 1866 Indian Head cent had a mintage of just under 10 million pieces, placing it among the lower-mintage issues of the post-Civil War Reconstruction era when the Philadelphia Mint was adjusting production levels after wartime demands. The wreath-through-feathers clash pattern is characteristic of the Indian Head cent series, where the proximity of the obverse headdress feathers to the reverse oak and laurel wreath created a recurring vulnerability to clash transfer in that specific zone. Collectors of die clashes on this denomination prize examples with strong, clear transfer impressions.
