1865 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-419
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-419, Pollock-489, is the fourth and final 1865 Shield Nickel prototype pattern. This last variety represents the most refined version of the design before its adoption in 1866. The four-variety development series from J-416 through J-419 was remarkably compact compared to the multi-year programs for other denominations, reflecting both the urgency of the need and the clarity of the design concept. Chief Engraver James B. Longacre's Shield Nickel would be one of his final major designs, entering production just two years before his death in 1869.
