Description
Judd-416, Pollock-486, is one of the most historically significant patterns of the Civil War era — a prototype of the Shield Nickel that would be adopted for production in 1866. The obverse features the Union shield design that symbolized the defense of the nation, flanked by a laurel wreath with crossed arrows behind. The reverse displays a large numeral 5 surrounded by stars and rays. These Shield Nickel prototypes represent the Mint's response to the urgent need for a small-denomination base-metal coin to replace the unpopular fractional currency notes. The copper-nickel alloy and bold design marked a significant departure from traditional coin aesthetics.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-6 to R-7. Approximately 10-15 specimens known. Highly sought after as prototypes of the adopted Shield Nickel design.
