Description
Judd-417, Pollock-487, is the second Shield Nickel prototype pattern. This variety features a design variation from J-416, testing different arrangements of the stars and rays on the reverse, modifications to the shield proportions, or alternative alloy compositions. The rapid development of the five-cent nickel in 1865 — going from experimental pattern to adopted design within months — reflects the urgency of the small-change crisis and the political will to resolve it. The Act of May 16, 1866 would authorize the Shield Nickel based on these prototypes.
