Description
The 1865 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-417 is a proof five-cent piece struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. It pairs a shield obverse with a reverse showing a 5 inside a ring of 13 stars separated by rays, the design adopted for the Shield nickel in 1866; some regard it as a true prototype of that coin.
