Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the PC-2c-1865-08R documents a pre-cud on the reverse of the 1865 Two Cent Piece struck from the Fancy 5 date logotype. Pre-cuds represent the initial stage of rim die failure, where a crack has propagated from the edge into the die but the separated fragment has not yet broken free — making them precursors to the retained cuds and full cuds that develop with continued use. The Two Cent Piece, produced from 1864 to 1873 and designed by James B. Longacre, holds the distinction of being the first United States coin to carry the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1865 Fancy 5 variety is distinguished from the Plain 5 by the more ornate serif on the numeral, and die varieties from this short-lived denomination are collected by both die break specialists and Civil War-era type collectors. Examination of the rim area under magnification reveals the characteristic thin raised line extending inward from the edge that signals the early stage of die deterioration.
