RCD-2c-1865-02R Retained Cud

Description

Second in the reverse retained cud sequence for the 1865 Two Cent Piece, RCD-2c-1865-02R appears here on the Fancy 5 date variety. The Fancy 5 logotype, with its ornamental curved flag on the final digit, represents one of two distinct date punch styles used during 1865 production at Philadelphia. A retained cud develops when progressive cracking reaches the rim and a section fractures but remains held by surrounding die steel, impressing a raised mass onto every subsequent planchet. The Two Cent Piece was conceived during the Civil War partly as a vehicle for IN GOD WE TRUST, which first appeared on the denomination in 1864 and would eventually spread to all circulating denominations by 1938. Struck in bronze — 95% copper with tin and zinc — the 1865 issue was produced during the denomination's peak years before declining demand led to reduced mintages and discontinuation in 1873. Two reverse retained cuds for the Fancy 5 suggests moderate die attrition consistent with a denomination whose bold, high-relief design placed substantial demands on working dies.
