RCD-2c-1865-04R Retained Cud

Description

Struck in the second year of the Two Cent Piece series—the first U.S. coin to bear the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST"—this retained cud appears on the 1865 Fancy 5 date variant. RCD-2c-1865-04R documents the fourth cataloged retained cud on the reverse of the 1865 Two Cent Piece with the ornamental Fancy 5 style numeral in the date, distinguishing it from the Plain 5 variant that shares the same catalog number but represents a different parent coin. A retained cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures completely yet the separated fragment remains held in position during striking, producing a raised or weakly detailed area on each planchet it contacts. The Two Cent Piece (1864-1873) was produced exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint, and the Fancy 5 versus Plain 5 distinction in 1865 dates reflects two different punches used to engrave the final digit of the date into working dies.
