Description

Judd-363, Pollock-434, is the first of twelve 1864 two-cent patterns (J-363 through J-374) that represent the final refinement stage before the denomination entered production. The two-cent piece was authorized by the Coinage Act of April 22, 1864, and these patterns document the last adjustments made to the shield obverse and wreath reverse. The famous IN GOD WE TRUST motto appears on the shield banner, and the Small Motto versus Large Motto distinction that characterizes early 1864 two-cent production may be visible in some of these patterns. Struck in bronze with proof finish.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-6 to R-7. Approximately 10-15 specimens known. The 1864 two-cent patterns are popular with motto series collectors.
