Description

Exhibiting a reverse die clash where design elements from the obverse have been transferred to the reverse die face, this 1864 copper-nickel Indian Head Cent documents a die-to-die impact event where the two dies struck each other without an intervening planchet. On the reverse, the Indian's nose from the obverse die is visibly clashed through the letter C in CENT — a characteristic clash pattern on Indian Head Cents where the high-relief nose on the obverse die aligns directly with the C on the reverse die when the two faces meet, creating a transferred impression in one of the most recognizable clash locations on the series. Die clashes occur during normal press operations when a planchet fails to feed between the dies, allowing them to contact each other directly, and the resulting transferred impressions from one die appear as raised anomalies on every coin subsequently struck until the die is repaired or replaced. This compositional transition makes 1864 one of the most complex years for Indian Head Cent collectors, with two distinct compositions produced during a single calendar year. James Barton Longacre designed the series with Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress on the obverse and an oak wreath enclosing ONE CENT on the reverse. The copper-nickel composition's harder planchet material may have influenced die clash dynamics compared to the softer bronze issues, as the harder planchets would have subjected the dies to greater striking forces during normal operations.
