1864 Indian Head Cent (Bronze No L) Die Clash (Obverse and Reverse)

Description

Struck during the pivotal mid-1864 composition change from copper-nickel to bronze, this Indian Head Cent die clash preserves bilateral transfer marks on a No L subtype — the version without designer James Longacre's initial on the ribbon, produced before the L was added partway through the year. On the reverse, the Indian's neck outline from the obverse clashed into the area beneath the shield, while feather detail transferred near the top of the right wreath leaf. The obverse carries reciprocal evidence: wreath elements from the reverse appear clashed between the bottom feathers of the headdress. These bilateral marks indicate a forceful die-to-die contact event during a planchet-less press cycle. The 1864 Bronze No L represents the first bronze Indian Head Cents, following the mid-year transition from the heavier copper-nickel composition used since 1859. This change — reducing planchet weight from 4.67 to 3.11 grams — was adopted to conserve copper during the Civil War. Die clashes on these transitional issues provide evidence of production conditions during the changeover. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them.
