Description

Judd-334, Pollock-386, is the final variety in the extensive 1863 dime pattern series. This proof striking completes the ten-die-combination, twenty-five-plus-variety study that constitutes one of the most thorough denomination evaluations in American pattern history. The dime series from J-325 through J-334 collectively explored every aspect of potential dime design modification, from obverse device changes to reverse arrangements to alloy alternatives. While the Seated Liberty dime would ultimately continue in production with only the addition of the motto in 1866, these patterns demonstrate that far more radical changes were considered during the Civil War crisis.
