Description

Judd-326b is a second compositional variant of J-326, struck in yet another alloy. The existence of three compositions (J-326, J-326a, J-326b) for a single die combination indicates the Mint was conducting a thorough materials evaluation for this particular design concept. The three metals represent silver, copper, and either nickel or aluminum, covering the full range of alloys under consideration for small-denomination coinage. This triple-composition testing approach was typical of the most seriously considered designs in the 1863 dime series.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-7 to R-8. Scarcer than J-326a. Estimated 3-5 specimens known.
