1863 Proof Dime Pattern - J-331c
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-331c is the fourth and rarest composition in the J-331 series, making the complete set of J-331 through J-331c unique among 1863 dime patterns for its breadth of metallurgical testing. This final variant was struck in the most experimental alloy of the group, aluminum or a novel copper-based formulation. The existence of four distinct compositions for a single die combination is unusual even by the prolific standards of Civil War era pattern production and indicates this design was seriously considered for adoption.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-8. Extremely rare. Estimated 2-4 specimens known. The rarest composition in the J-331 series.
