Description

Judd-331, Pollock-383, is notable within the 1863 dime pattern series for being known in four compositions (J-331, J-331a, J-331b, and J-331c), more than any other die combination in the series. This indicates the design represented by J-331 was considered particularly promising and warranted the most extensive metallurgical evaluation. The four-composition approach allowed comparison across silver, copper, nickel, and aluminum or another experimental metal. Struck in silver with proof finish for the standard version.
