Description
The 1863 Proof Dime Pattern - J-330a is a proof dime struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. This ten-cent piece was proposed as a coin to replace Postage Currency notes: one side has a small shield in a wreath with EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES, the other POSTAGE CURRENCY, ACT JULY 1862 and 10 CENTS 1863; David Cassel's research, reported by USPatterns, found many of the weights and alloys given in Judd to be wrong. USPatterns, citing David Cassel, counts three or four reeded-edge pieces in copper-nickel. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge; USPatterns rates it R-7. Catalogued as Judd-330a, Pollock-401, Taxay EP354. Cataloged as PCGS #60490.
