Description
The 1863 Proof Dime Pattern - J-330 is a proof dime struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. This ten-cent piece was proposed as a coin to replace Postage Currency notes: one side has a small shield in a wreath with EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES, the other POSTAGE CURRENCY, ACT JULY 1862 and 10 CENTS 1863; David Cassel's research, reported by USPatterns, found many of the weights and alloys given in Judd to be wrong. USPatterns reports 15 pieces struck on May 27, 1863, in a tin alloy said to contain 3% copper, though no tested piece has matched it. It is struck in a tin alloy listed as 97% tin and 3% copper with a plain edge. Catalogued as Judd-330, Pollock-399, A/W 386, Taxay EP356. Cataloged as PCGS #60489.
