1863 Proof Dime Pattern - J-328a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-328a is the first compositional variant of J-328, struck in an alternative alloy while sharing the identical die combination. This piece allows direct comparison of the J-328 design concept in a different metal, providing additional data for the Mint's evaluation of both the design and the potential for base-metal dime production. The wartime economy had made silver increasingly difficult to retain in circulation, and base-metal alternatives were being seriously considered for all silver denominations.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7. Approximately 5-8 specimens known. Off-metal variants are typically scarcer than standard compositions.
