Three distinct error types converge on this final-year copper-nickel Indian Head Cent, making it an extraordinary specimen. The 1863 coin exhibits die clash, tapered planchet, and spiked head errors on a single piece. The die clash transferred the reverse wreath pattern onto the obverse in front of Liberty's neck and face — a common consequence of dies striking each other without an intervening planchet. The tapered planchet error is visible at OF AME on the reverse, where the planchet thins noticeably, indicating the blank was cut from a strip of uneven thickness. The spiked head resulted from a die crack extending from the tip of the bust to the rim, creating a raised spike of metal on struck coins. The convergence of three distinct error types on one coin is uncommon and suggests a production environment under considerable stress. The year 1863 fell during the Civil War, when public hoarding had stripped coins from circulation and the Mint pushed dies far beyond their normal working life to meet demand.
