1862 Proof Cent Pattern - J-292
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-292, Pollock-344, is the third and final 1862 proof cent pattern variety. This piece completes the trio of experimental cent designs produced during the year, testing yet another combination of design details or alloy composition. The progression from J-290 through J-292 demonstrates the methodical approach the Philadelphia Mint took when evaluating changes to the cent, with each variety representing a distinct option for consideration. The results of these 1862 experiments informed the dramatic change that came in 1864, when the cent transitioned from copper-nickel to bronze and the weight was reduced from 4.67 to 3.11 grams.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7. Approximately 5-10 specimens known. The scarcest of the 1862 cent pattern trio.
