1862 Proof Cent Pattern - J-291
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-291, Pollock-343, is a proof cent pattern testing an experimental composition or design variation on the Indian Head cent. Struck during the second year of the Civil War, this pattern reflects the Mint's ongoing investigation of alternative materials for the cent denomination. The hoarding crisis of 1862 had begun to affect even base-metal coinage, and the Mint was under pressure from Congress and the Treasury to find solutions that would keep small-denomination coins in circulation. Various alloy modifications were tested, and the results of these experiments would ultimately lead to the adoption of bronze for cents beginning in 1864.
