Description

Judd-290, Pollock-342, in proof format is an Indian Head cent pattern struck with careful die preparation and multiple impressions to achieve mirror-like fields. This proof version of the 1862 cent pattern shares the same die combination as the business strike but exhibits the sharply defined details and reflective surfaces characteristic of proof coinage. The Indian Head obverse by James B. Longacre pairs with the oak wreath and shield reverse in the standard copper-nickel alloy of the era. By 1862, the copper-nickel cent was approaching its final years of production, as wartime economic conditions would soon force the transition to bronze.
